In brief: Nicaragua

* Nicaragua’s 92-member unicameral national legislature has approved a US$100m loan from Taiwan. This provides a major line of support to the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional government led by President Daniel Ortega which has been hit by the economic impact of the crisis stemming from the government crackdown on anti-government protesters, which began in April 2018, as well as economic sanctions from the US. Nicaragua, Guatemala, and Honduras continue to have diplomatic relations with Taiwan while Panama, Costa Rica, El Salvador, and the Dominican Republic have all made the switch to mainland China.
