LatinNews Regional Monitor: Andean Group - 25 February 2019

In brief: Peru

* Peru’s Prime Minister César Villanueva has hailed the decision by freight transport workers’ unions to lift a strike which it has been staged in various regions for six days. The decision was taken following a meeting on 23 February with transport & communications minister Edmer Trujillo; energy & mining minister Francisco Ísmodes; and the general manager of Peru’s state-owned oil company Petroperú, Esteban Bertarelli, among others. The announcement followed various concessions offered to unions, which include the Unión Nacional de Transportistas (UNT), such as a reduction of PEN0.59 (US$0.18) per gallon of diesel in Petroperú-owned petrol stations as well as the agreement to suspend tolls at a highway in Yauca district (Arequipa region) for five months or until 70% of the road is re-established. A new meeting is due to take place on 28 February to review the progress of the agreements reached.
