* Brazil’s federal senate has approved the nomination of
Roberto Campos Neto as the new president of Brazil’s central bank (BCB), with 55 votes in favour and six against.
Campos Neto, an economist who has spent most of his career at Santander Americas, was designated for the position by President
Jair Bolsonaro, on the advice of Economy Minister
Paulo Guedes. In a speech to the senate’s economic issues committee (CAE) who voted on his nomination before it was put to the senate plenary,
Campos Neto defended working towards greater autonomy for the BCB.
Campos Neto’s appointment is well-received by the financial sector, and he is expected to provide continuity with the monetary policy of his predecessor,
Ilan Goldfajn.
