In brief: Costa Rica

* Costa Rica's President Carlos Alvarado has signed a decree extending a national moratorium on the exploration and exploitation of oil deposits in Costa Rican territory until 31 December 2050. The decree was first issued in 2002 under the Abel Pacheco administration (2002-2006) and has been extended under Laura Chinchilla (2010-2014) and Luis Guillermo Solís (2014-2018). The announcement came after President Alvarado unveiled a long term “decarbonisation” plan (2018-205) whereby by 2050 Costa Rica would achieve “zero net emissions”, meaning it would produce no more emissions than it can offset through things such as maintaining and expanding its extensive forests.
