Brazil/Paraguay: On 24 February, US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Kimberly Breier began a trip to Brazil and Paraguay to “promote regional prosperity, security, democracy, and human rights” according to the US State Department. From 24-28 February, Breier travelled to the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, and São Paulo to deepen US-Brazil cooperation in “support of democracy in the Western Hemisphere, especially in Venezuela, and our shared economic prosperity and security”. Breier met senior government officials including Foreign Minister Ernesto Araújo, Justice Minister Sérgio Moro, Deputy Minister for Trade and International Affairs Marcos Troyjo, International Affairs Advisor Filipe Martins, and Federal Deputy for São Paulo state Eduardo Bolsonaro.  The US government official was also due to meet business leaders, students, and members of civil society along with United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) representatives, ambassadors from Lima Group countries, and Venezuelan migrants. From Brazil Breier travelled to Paraguay on 1 March where she was due to meet President Mario Abdo Benítez, Finance Minister Benigno López Benítez, Deputy Foreign Minister Hugo Saguier Caballero, Attorney General Sandra Quiñonez Astigarraga, and the head of the secretariat for the prevention of the laundering of money or assets (Seprelad) Maria Epifania González de Rodríguez to discuss bilateral and regional issues, including security cooperation, support for Venezuela, and economic prosperity.
