Mexico fuelling US fentanyl crisis

The synthetic opioid fentanyl has become an increasingly important fixture in the US illegal drug market, and there is mounting evidence that Mexican traffickers play a pivotal role in the supply chain. Indeed, demand for fentanyl has suppressed prices for raw opium in Mexico, compromising the marginalised rural populations that have come to rely on opium poppies as a cash crop.
