In brief: Venezuela

* The Venezuelan government led by Nicolás Maduro has announced the suspension of the working day and classes all over the country as a result of an electricity blackout that has affected at least 11 of the country’s 23 states. Venezuela’s state-owned electricity utility firm (Corpoelec) reported that the blackout on 7 March was due to an attack on the national grid, without providing more details, and said that it was working to resolve the issue. However, the political opposition has attributed the blackout, which has affected the country’s main airports and the metro in Caracas, to the government’s “inefficient” management of the national electricity system, marked by a chronic lack of investment.
