US supports Nicaragua dialogue

Nicaragua: On 7 March, the deputy spokesperson for the US Department of State, Robert Palladino, urged the Nicaraguan government led by President Daniel Ortegato join the church-led peace dialogue and…negotiate in good faith”. The Nicaraguan government and the opposition grouping Alianza Cívica por la Justicia y la Democracia issued a joint statement on 5 March announcing that they had agreed on a 16-point roadmap for a dialogue aimed at finding a solution to the country’s protracted political crisis. The US ambassador to Nicaragua, Kevin Sullivan, told journalists on 6 March that the US government welcomes these latest efforts for dialogue. Sullivan also considers positive the invitation for Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes, the archbishop of Managua, to be the guarantor of the dialogue, saying this will help reinforce the dialogue’s legitimacy. The last attempt at dialogue had failed after Ortega unilaterally abandoned the process in July 2018, and doubts persist over his commitment to this new dialogue process.
