EL SALVADOR: The battle between new and old politics

In his victory speech on election night (3 February) Nayib Bukele told his ecstatic supporters that the country had “turned the page on the post-war period” and should now look to the future, not the past. That may be an overstatement. What is clear, however, is that a battle between the old politics of El Salvador and what could be called the new politics is actually just beginning. The outcome is not a foregone conclusion.
