Venezuela’s multi-layered crisis is fuelling tensions between the government led by President Sebastián Piñera and the left-wing opposition over Chile’s traditionally apolitical foreign policy. Exacerbating these tensions, Piñera is due to host a summit in Santiago on 24 March to launch a new regional integration initiative to replace the Union of South American Nations (Unasur), accused of serving the interests of the Venezuelan government led by Nicolás Maduro.
