Hopes for repair of oil pipeline with community support

On 27 February 2019, a spokesperson for Peruvian state-owned petroleum company Petroperú announced that an agreement had been reached with the indigenous Wampis community of Mayuriaga that would allow for repairs to be carried out on a pipeline in the Amazonian north-eastern region of Loreto, Peru. The pipeline was damaged in late-November 2018, with Petroperú reporting an oil spill of 8000 barrels, after members of the Wampis community are believed to have deliberately severed the pipe.
