In brief: Mexico

* In an interview with US political website Politico on 2 April, the speaker of the US House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), affirmed that the House will only consider backing the new US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement (USMCA) after Mexico passes and implements the major labour law reforms required under the deal. In the last few months, passing the USMCA has become a top legislative priority in the administration of US President Donald Trump, yet Pelosi’s declarations indicate that it will be harder than expected to pass the agreement before the 2020 mid-term legislative election campaigns begins in the US. Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has signalled the intention to pass the required labour legislation before the end of April, when the country’s congress goes into recess.
