Brazil: Uncovering the power of Rio de Janeiro’s militia

Two days before the one-year anniversary of Marielle Franco’s murder, Rio de Janeiro’s civil police arrested two men accused of killing Franco, a local councilwoman, and her driver Anderson Gomes on 14 March 2018. The arrests are the first tangible results of a long, tortuous and painfully slow investigation into the murder and its motives. Many questions remain unanswered and the investigation continues, but it has so far served to bring to light the tangled web of corruption, criminal interests and power struggles that is underlying to Rio’s political scene.
