Panama: Nito’s recipe for growth

Laurentino ‘Nito’ Cortizo, a former legislator and agriculture minister (2004-2006), is leading the race in Panama’s presidential elections, which are due to be held on 5 May. In some polls Cortizo, from the centre-left Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD), has up to double the support of his nearest rival, Rómulo Roux of the centre-right Cambio Democrático (CD). While surprises are still possible, it is worth looking more closely at Cortizo’s economic policy proposals.
