In brief: Brazil

* Brazilian airline Avianca Brasil has cancelled over 1,000 flights nationwide for the week ending 28 April, after it was forced to return 18 leased aircraft for failing to meet payments. The national civil aviation agency (Anac) had announced on 18 April that Avianca will gradually return the aircraft after the Easter weekend (from 22 April) so as to minimise the impact on passengers. Brazilian media report that over 1,300 flights have been cancelled between 19 and 28 April, with news site G1 calculating that only 12 airports across Brazil will be served by Avianca flights by 28 April, down from 26 airports on 22 April. With the return of the 18 aeroplanes, Avianca’s fleet has diminished to less than 10 aircraft and G1 calculates that the number of Avianca flights this week has fallen by 66% compared with last year. Avianca Brasil filed for bankruptcy protection in December 2018 after falling behind on payments to aircraft lessors.
