PERU: Political storm over García suicide

Early in the morning of 17 April police and prosecutors arrived at the Lima home of Peru’s former president Alan García (1985-1990; 2006-2011) to arrest him as part of ongoing investigations into corrupt payments by the Brazilian construction company Odebrecht. García went to an upstairs room and shot himself in the head. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but died shortly afterwards. His death has detonated a new political storm over the handling of corruption investigations in the country.
