CHILE: Grappling with the China question

Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera set out on a six-day official visit to China and South Korea on 24 April. Along with a few other centre-to-right wing Latin American leaders, Piñera’s challenge is complex: to overcome any remaining domestic ideological qualms about the relationship with Beijing, to secure economic benefits for Chile, and to minimise the diplomatic and economic fallout coming from the US.
