NICARAGUA: Fresh claims of police repression

One year on since the government led by President Daniel Ortega began its crackdown on opponents, there is no end in sight to the political crisis which has left over 500 dead. Since the latest talks between the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government and opposition Alianza Cívica por la Justicia y la Democracia (ACJD) failed to produce a breakthrough [WR-19-14], the US government has announced further sanctions targeting Ortega’s inner circle. Despite this, and the threat of further sanctions from the European Union (EU), the Ortega government is showing no sign of any concessions – as evidenced by opposition complaints regarding recent police (PNN) repression.
