Workforce formalisation: A challenge too far for Vizcarra?

An informal workforce has long undermined Peru’s capacity to develop as an economy and a society. The last time progress was made in cutting the informal sector was during a decade (2002-2012) of high economic growth. With President Martín Vizcarra riding the crest of a wave of popularity following last year’s anti-corruption intervention, he is now seeking to tackle a seemingly intractable informal economy with his new multi-sectoral Competitiveness and Productivity agenda. Here we analyse his prospects.
