Highway reopened after agreement is reached with indigenous groups

On 6 April, the Colombian government led by President Iván Duque reached an agreement with indigenous groups in the southwestern Pacific department of Cauca, after a four-week-long blockade of the Pan-American highway. The government has agreed to increase the US$3bn allocated to the Cauca Valley – home to approximately 200,000 indigenous people, largely of Quechua origin – by 17.5%, with the Interior Minister signalling that the additional funding would be targeted at education, healthcare and rural housing.
