DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Will Medina seek re-election?

Uncertainty surrounds whether Dominican President Danilo Medina will seek to amend, or circumvent, the constitution to stand for a third term in presidential elections this time next year. The majority of legislators representing the ruling Partido de la Liberación Dominicana (PLD), which has held uninterrupted power since 2004, favour a reform to permit Medina to stand again. Former president Leonel Fernández, who has himself served for three terms but wants to stand for a fourth for the PLD in 2020, carried out a rally at the weekend opposing a constitutional change. An opinion survey published by Gallup suggests the majority of respondents share Fernández’s view, but a majority of PLD supporters would prefer to vote for Medina.
