Brazil: Homicide figures give glimmer of hope

Brazil broke its own record for homicides in 2017, with around 64,000 violent deaths. This figure became a tangible manifestation of the fear of violence and the insecurity felt by much of the population, which contributed to the election of tough-on-crime politicians last year, including now-President Jair Bolsonaro. Recent figures show, however, that homicides had begun to decline in 2018, a trend which appears to have continued in early 2019. This gives the municipal, state, and federal authorities a positive basis on which to build as they work to tackle Brazil’s still-high levels of crime and violence.
