Haiti: UNSC votes to end Minujusth

In a move which has prompted concerns from the neighbouring Dominican Republic (DR), the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has voted to end the presence of the UN Mission for Justice Support in Haiti (Minujusth) in October 2019. The deadline had already been scheduled and UN Secretary General António Guterres had highlighted progress with regard to the strengthening of the police (PNd’H). However, major concerns persist with regard both to the PNd’H as well as the situation of stability in the country given the recent protests in February and linked resignation of Prime Minister Jean Henry Céant (see our sister publication Latin American Weekly Report [WR-19-11] for more discussion of this crisis). The end of the mission would also come at a particularly crucial time with legislative elections scheduled for October.
