COLOMBIA: Tension runs high as JEP releases Santrich

In a day high on drama Colombia’s transitional justice system (JEP) ordered the immediate release on 15 May of Seuxis Paucias Hernández Solarte (‘Jesús Santrich’), a senior former member of the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) and peace negotiator, who had been arrested just over a year ago accused of involvement in drug trafficking. The JEP’s decision prompted the immediate resignation of the attorney general, Néstor Humberto Martínez, who had been battling for jurisdiction over the case which he had brought. President Iván Duque promised to appeal the ruling, which does not rule out Santrich facing trial in Colombia but bars his extradition to the US.
