Taking on the ‘fake news’ challenge

Campaigning for Argentina’s October 2019 general election officially begins on 12 July, but smear campaigns are already underway. Speaking to The New York Times, an unnamed campaign official has said he expects this presidential election to be the country’s dirtiest to date. While smear campaigns are nothing new, the escalated rate and scale of the proliferation of misinformation on social media, as evidenced during the 2016 presidential election in the US and, more recently, in Brazil last year, is causing real concerns as to the possible manipulation of voters impacting the outcome of the elections in Argentina.
