ARGENTINA: What’s in a name?

“Fernández for the presidency, Fernández for power.” This, as expected, will be one of the slogans employed in the campaign ahead of October’s presidential elections. The surname will be on the ballot papers and all electoral publicity. That former president Cristina Fernández (2007-2015) would run against President Mauricio Macri has been taken as a given for months so it was no surprise when she confirmed on 18 May that this would indeed be the case. What did come as a major surprise, however, was that she would be filling the vice-presidential berth on a joint ticket with her namesake (though no relation), Alberto Fernández.
