PANAMA: Pressure grows over constitutional reform

“A golden opportunity which must be seized now”. This was the response by Panama’s leading private sector lobby Cámara de Comercio, Industrias y Agricultura de Panamá (CCIAP) to the issue of constitutional reform – the need for which has been widely recognised by president-elect Laurentino Cortizo as well as the other main candidates in the 5 May general election. While Cortizo has suggested that this process will begin once his new Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD) government takes office in July, CCIAP is calling for the process to start now, warning that Panama cannot wait “another five years”.
