LatinNews Regional Monitor: Andean Group - 29 May 2019

Introduction

In this May edition of Latin American Regional Report: Andean Group we begin by looking at Peru where last month the national statistics institute (INEI) triumphantly announced that poverty levels in the country fell over 2018 by 1.2 percentage points. This equates to 313,000 people escaping poverty over the course of one year. While these figures might, at first glance, seem to paint a positive picture, we consider how they mask both significant regional variation as well as a slowdown in the reduction of inequality, casting doubt on claims of progress by the government.
