BRAZIL: Big army op in Rio's shantytowns fails to impress

As an example of military efficiency, the massive deployment of troops in Rio de Janeiro shantytowns in search of weapons stolen from an army guard post was hardly inspiring. As a showpiece of improved intelligence on the city's criminal underworld it fared little better. Ten days after occupying and searching 10 shantytowns, the troops withdrew emptyhanded. Only later, guided by a tip, did a smaller contingent return and find the weapons in less than a day.
