MEXICO: Rowing back on healthcare sector austerity

Following the unexpected resignation of the head of Mexico’s social security institute (IMSS) last week over complaints that ‘republican austerity’ policies were undermining its ability to fulfil its obligations [WR-19-20], the Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena) government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has been forced into allocating increased funding for the public healthcare sector. This policy reversal is an attempt to ease concerns that Mexico’s public healthcare sector is in crisis. However, it may not be enough to resolve the problems faced by the sector and the public’s perception of the government could continue to deteriorate.
