In brief: Brazil

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released figures which show that industrial production increased by 0.3% in April 2019 compared to the previous month. However, compared to April 2018, industrial production fell by 3.9%. The industrial sector has accumulated negative growth of 2.7% over the first four months of 2019. Brazil’s extractive sector, which is yet to recover from the collapse of an iron ore tailings dam in Brumadinho, Minas Gerais state, last January, continues to drive these negative results.
