Tens of thousands of Ecuadoreans were glued to their screens on 2 June, or gathered in squares, parks, and stadiums around the country in front of giant screens, to witness the victory of Richard Carapaz in the Giro d’Italia, one of the three grand tours in cycling. President Lenín Moreno was quick to praise the sporting achievement of Carapaz, whose surname ‘peaceful face’ is the image he wants to project of his government in marked contrast to that of his confrontational predecessor Rafael Correa (2007-2017) whose legacy Moreno is steadily unpicking.
