EL SALVADOR: More questions than answers as Bukele takes office

“We are thinking big, we are going to leave a legacy for the Salvadorean people that history will not erase,” President Nayib Bukele said during his investiture on 1 June. Bukele, who at 37 is the youngest of El Salvador’s 46 heads of state since independence in 1841, offered no indication during his inaugural address, however, as to his vision of governance let alone the policy initiatives he intends to adopt in the economic or social sphere that could leave an indelible mark on the country.
