In brief: Brazil

* Brazil’s foreign minister Ernesto Araújo met with his Uruguayan counterpart Rodolfo Nin Novoa in Brasília. Amongst the bilateral issues discussed, the two men reaffirmed their respective country’s commitment to strengthening the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) trade bloc and reaching a trade agreement with the European Union (EU). Nin Novoa and Araújo signed a bilateral agreement on the elimination of double taxation on income and property tax and the prevention of tax evasion, a tool which Uruguay and Brazil hope will encourage investment and trade, particularly in the services and information technology sectors.
