Bolivia: Morales seeks to downplay police scandal

Ahead of the October general election, the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government led by President Evo Morales is seeking to downplay a major corruption scandal in the police, which links some of the force’s highest-ranking members in Santa Cruz to narcotrafficker Pedro Montenegro Paz. The scandal has led the government to introduce “drastic measures” and counterintelligence to “sanitise” the Bolivian police, while President Morales has continued to resist pressure to dismiss his interior minister Carlos Romero.
