LatinNews Regional Monitor: Brazil & Southern Cone - 13 June 2019

In brief: Brazil

* Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has revealed that retail sales fell 0.6% in April this year compared to March, with a decrease in five of the eight observed retail sectors. Sales of office supplies, textiles & clothing, and supermarket products fell the most, decreasing by 8%, 5.5%, and 1.7% respectively. This comes after retail sales had essentially stagnated in February and March (falling and then growing by 0.1%). “From January to April [the retail sector] has accumulated nothing. It’s as if the year 2019 has not made any contribution towards the recovery of the downward trajectory begun in 2014”, Isabella Nunes, Ibge’s coordinator of the research on retail sales, says.
