NICARAGUA |
Unemployment continues to rise. According to figures published by local think-tank Funides on 15 May, unemployment levels in Nicaragua are predicted to rise from 5.5% in 2018 to between 7.5% and 8.5% in 2019. This increase of between two and three percentage points equates to between 66,000 and 98,000 people newly unemployed, meaning the total number of people unemployed will be between 244,000 and 276,000. The reason cited for this increase is the country’s political and socioeconomic crisis that began in April 2018, stemming from the crackdown by the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega on its opponents.
