BRAZIL-ARGENTINA: Spectre of Fernández hovers over Bolsonaro-Macri meeting

Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro paid a short state visit to Argentina on 6 June to meet his peer Mauricio Macri. Bolsonaro’s initial indifference towards Brazil’s southern neighbour appears to have given way to a desire for close cooperation, perhaps as the realisation has set in that Argentina is not just important for Brazil’s economy but that there is also a real chance that the centre-right Macri will be defeated by a leftist coalition including former president Cristina Fernández (2007-2015) in Argentina’s presidential elections in October.
