BRAZIL: Moro’s fall from grace?

Sérgio Moro, a former federal judge who led the charge on the ‘Lava Jato’ (Car Wash) corruption investigation until he accepted President Jair Bolsonaro’s offer to become Brazil’s justice minister last November, is a divisive figure. Some revere him as an ‘anticorruption superhero’, or at the very least consider him a principled individual who worked rigorously on the Lava Jato case. Others see him as having repeatedly overstepped the mark in his duties as judge, with more virulent critics accusing him of having led a politicised judicial crusade against the leftist Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT). Revelations made by news site The Intercept Brasil on 9 June provide some vindication for the latter and have inflamed the debate over the legitimacy of the Lava Jato probe and its tactics.
