COLOMBIA: Politicians up in arms as Santrich is sworn in

Consummating a sensitive political blow for the government led by President Iván Duque and his campaign to ensure that the 2016 peace deal signed with the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) does not allow former guerrilla leaders to avoid just punishment, Seuxis Paucias Hernández Solarte (‘Jesús Santrich’) was formally sworn-in as a national deputy on 11 June. Santrich assumed one of the five seats in the lower chamber of congress assigned to the Farc under the peace deal just two weeks after controversially being released from jail.
