EL SALVADOR: Bukele lashes out at FMLN

President Nayib Bukele set off a firestorm this week by alleging on Twitter that two senior members of the left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) were financing El Salvador’s mara gangs to attack the police and destabilise his government. Three police officers have been killed. The FMLN vehemently denied the claims and has moved to sue Bukele for defamation. But, in a clear sign that he intends to be confrontational not conciliatory with the political opposition, Bukele has also used Twitter to announce the dismissal of dozens of public officials he said were relatives of senior figures in the FMLN appointed through nepotism.
