LatinNews Regional Monitor: Brazil & Southern Cone - 20 June 2019

In brief: Brazil

* Brazil’s national industry confederation (CNI), a private sector lobby, has released its index of industrial business confidence (ICEI) for June, which stands at 56.9 (on a scale of 0 to 100). This shows a slight increase compared to May, when the index stood at 56.5, putting an end to a downward trend in business confidence after the index fell for four consecutive months. The ICEI’s different components show a divergence, as the index for current conditions has continued to fall, a reflection of businesses’ negative perception of the current climate, whereas the expectations index has risen, as confidence in the business and economic outlook of the next six months increases. Confidence has grown in the manufacturing and construction sectors (by 0.5 and 1.2 points respectively, compared to May), but it has fallen by 2.2 points in the extractive sector.
