MEXICO: Erecting ‘border wall’ with Guatemala?

The Mexican government has started deploying security forces, including the national guard, to the border with Guatemala in a bid to stem the flow of illegal migrants from Central America entering the country. Reinforcing security at the border with Guatemala is one of the actions that the government led by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador agreed to take under the migration deal it reached with the US government last week [WR-19-23]. But the move has been criticised in some quarters in Mexico, with the López Obrador government accused of doing President Donald Trump’s ‘dirty work’ by effectively erecting a border wall to stop migration to the US after his plan to build a wall on the US-Mexico border has failed to materialise. The issue is problematic for the López Obrador government as it undermines its professed commitment to upholding human rights and not allowing the US to dictate its migration policy.
