ARGENTINA: Massa hitches up to Kirchnerismo

“Each of us has to take a dose of humility, and recognise how far our capacity stretches, fighting at the right time and place.” With these words Sergio Massa threw in his lot with Kirchnerismo, the radical brand of Peronism he professed to revile when setting up his moderate Alternativa Federal (AF) grouping and promising a third way to end Argentina’s political polarisation. Massa agreed on 18 June to head the list of federal deputies for the province of Buenos Aires for the Frente de Todos coalition led by Alberto Fernández and former president Cristina Fernández (2007-2015) in October’s general elections rather than compete for the presidency in primary elections on 11 August. While Massa’s U-turn will damage his credibility, he is likely to retain sufficient personal support to boost the Fernández duo and trouble President Mauricio Macri’s re-election bid.
