El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele is presiding over the most sweeping changes to the military top brass in a generation. Fresh from breaking with tradition in his choice of defence minister, Bukele pushed 11 generals into retirement, and promoted young colonels to senior military positions. The changes are calculated to take the fight to the country’s mara gangs with renewed vigour.
