EL SALVADOR: Changing of the guard

El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele is presiding over the most sweeping changes to the military top brass in a generation. Fresh from breaking with tradition in his choice of defence minister, Bukele pushed 11 generals into retirement, and promoted young colonels to senior military positions. The changes are calculated to take the fight to the country’s mara gangs with renewed vigour. The left-wing Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional (FMLN) touted the same leadership renewal through internal party elections on 16 June although it is not clear that the victor fits this description.
