The 18 June deadline for the Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) government led by President Daniel Ortega to release all political prisoners has come and gone. The deadline was in line with a deal struck with the opposition grouping Alianza Cívica por la Justicia y la Democracia (ACJD) in late March as part of efforts to find a solution to the crisis stemming from the government’s crackdown on its opponents which began in April 2018. Crucially the deadline was also stipulated by the Organization of American States (OAS) which is due to hold a general meeting later this month that could have further repercussions for the Ortega administration.
