Disappointing first-quarter growth

After six months in office, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has successfully channelled many Mexicans’ hopes for more jobs and economic improvement; he remains remarkably popular. But there is a problem. The economy isn’t expanding anywhere near the 4% annual rate he says he is targeting. In fact, first-quarter 2019 data show growth was deeply disappointing. Some analysts are even talking about a potential recession.
