Ituango dam project faces yet more turbulent times

Construction on the Ituango dam on the Cauca river in Antioquia department began in 2011, almost 30 years after the initial feasibility study was completed in 1983. The aim was for the 225m-high dam to be operational and generating hydroelectric power by late 2018; it was supposed to be the largest power plant in Colombia. Yet after the chaos that ensued in late April and early May 2018, when the tunnel that was supposed to divert the river around the works was blocked by a series of landslides, it seems that one problem after another has arisen for EPM Ituango, the project operator.
