Colombian teachers strike for a better education system

In March, Colombia’s main teachers’ union Federación Colombiana de Trabajadores de la Educación (Fecode) launched its second national strike since the beginning of 2019. The 48-hour strike was intended to protest the country’s new national development plan 2018-2022 (PND) which, entitled ‘A Pact for Equity’, serves as guidance for government investment decisions. With the government led by President Iván Duque subsequently agreeing a deal with Fecode which incorporates some of its demands, the union considers that its efforts have paid off.
